History Museum of Valencia

The Projects III task was to intervene in a residential area in the city of Valencia, proposing the expansion of the actual History Museum of Valencia and supported by a so-called minimuseum. It was also included the treatment of several wastelands with buildings or gardens, according to the main project idea.

Extension of the History Museum of Valencia

The History Museum of Valencia is situated in a former water deposit with brick columns and vaults and partially underground. Its aspect had to be maintained and the intervention over its fragile structure should be minimal.

The obvious problems of the site are the 3 party walls of the adjacent buildings, the residential 20-storey tower completely out of scale, hiding the museum from the dry riverbed of Turia ( branded as A River of Culture), the roof level difference of 1,50m from the main area, and also the relative remoteness and invisibility from the public transport.

The proposal is shaped in clear and simple volumes, playing with the interstices, the natural and artificial light, the materials and the required lightness of structure.

This project was submitted to the 2nd edition of the competition of the construction company Gesfesa, held in 2009.
The goal was to modify and explain the project in order to make it more sustainable. As sustainability has three interlaced aspects - social, economic and ecological, the project stands out for aspiring to be sustainable from conception - the call for visitors to the neighborhood of the museum and an improvement in the urban space, economy and ease of assembly and dis-assembly of the building, construction elements and systems that provide better maintenance and energy saving.
It has been awarded the 1st prize in the category of course-works.
